Director’s Notes
“We are all passengers on the Titanic”
— JACK FOSTER, Irish philosopher
•••••
On April 10, 1912, the great British liner RMS Titanic, the most advanced and largest moving man-made object in history set sail from Southampton to New York City on its first and final voyage.
This modern marvel was designed by Mr. Thomas Andrews, the 39-year-old nephew of Lord Pirrie, the principal owner of Harland and Wolff, the Belfast shipyard who built the Titanic. It was Andrews’ vision that made Titanic the pinnacle of technology and human achievement.
The first-class accommodations were designed to be the epitome of comfort and luxury, with a gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants, opulent cabins, and exclusive access to the promenade decks. For these privileges, passengers in 1912 would have paid around $2,560 for a first-class ticket, the equivalent of roughly $61,000 today. For a first-class luxury suite, $4500, which is nearly $136,284 today.
Titanic was under the command of Capt. Edward J. Smith, the finest and most experienced in the White Star Line fleet. This was to be his last voyage before his retirement. Smith was so well liked by both crew members and passengers alike that he earned the nickname “The Millionaire’s Captain” for his popularity with wealthy travelers. With a first-class passenger list that included such names as Benjamin Guggenheim, Isador and Ida Straus, John J. Astor, and Margaret “unsinkable Molly” Brown, Titanic carried some of the richest people in the world.
Titanic also carried hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere throughout Europe who were seeking a new life in the United States. Even in third class, many of these passengers commented that they had never known such luxury; hot and cold running water, brand new beds and meals that included rice soup, fresh bread, roast beef and brown gravy, sweetcorn, boiled potatoes, plum pudding, and fruit. These hopeful travelers would pay close to $35 per ticket, roughly $1,071 today.
The ship was deemed ‘unsinkable’ by the press as news spread of the advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors. These innovations were designed by Andrews to keep the ship afloat even if flooded.
Additionally, Titanic was equipped with a new high-powered radio-telegraph transmitter that was available for sending passenger "Marconi grams" and for the ship's operational use.
Among the passengers was Bruce Ismay, managing director for The White Star Line. So confident in his new technologically advanced ship, Ismay was reported to have said ‘even God Himself could not sink this ship’. This confidence may have contributed to the decision by White Star Line to remove half of the lifeboats, which were reported to have cluttered the decks and obstructed the ocean view for the first-class passengers.
Ismay was a competitive businessman and determined to set the speed record for Atlantic crossing. He is reported to have pressured Captain Smith to sail at an unusually high speed. Four days into the crossing on the evening of April 14th, despite at least seven iceberg warnings received from other ships, Captain Smith ordered his crew to set speed at a risky 23 knots, then retired to his cabin for the evening.
At 11:40 PM that same evening, about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, Titanic hit an iceberg. The collision caused the hull plates to buckle inwards as the iceberg clawed along her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea; she was only designed to survive four flooding.
Once he discovered the extent of the damage, it was Andrews who delivered the shocking news to the captain. It was a mathematical certainty. Titanic would sink.
Harold Bride, the junior radio operator who had received the earlier ice warnings now repeatedly sent out the recently created distress signal, S.O.S.
Some ships initially thought the distress calls were a hoax. How could the unsinkable ship be sinking? Though most ships within radio reach were still too far away to get there in time, only 10 miles away the SS Californian was within rescue distance. However, unlike Titanic, they had heeded the ice warnings and had chosen to stop sailing, turn their radio off for the night, and wait until daylight.
As the ship began to take on water, crew members attempted to evacuate some passengers. However, Titanic now carried only enough lifeboats for half the number of people on board. Additionally, the crew was inexperienced in lowering the new boat davits. This, along with the passenger’s confusion and initial disbelief of their dire circumstances resulted in many of the limited lifeboats being launched only partially full. A disproportionate number of men were left aboard because of the then standard protocol of loading women and children first.
At 2:20 AM, Titanic broke apart, floundered, and disappeared into the icy North Atlantic.
Just under two hours after Titanic sank, the RMS Carpathia arrived and brought aboard an estimated 705 survivors.
Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died; 39% of first-class passengers were lost, compared to 58% of second-class passengers and an astounding 76% of third-class passengers.
The disaster was met with worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life and the operational failures that led to it.
Public inquiries in Britain and the United States led to major changes in maritime safety regulations.
In 1985, the wreck of the Titanic was finally discovered lying 13,000 feet down on the Atlantic floor, exactly as she had fallen 73 years earlier. Since her discovery, thousands of artifacts have been recovered and displayed at museums around the world. Titanic has become one of the most famous ships in history, depicted in numerous works of popular culture including books, films, exhibits and memorials.
111 years after she sank, Titanic remains on the seabed of the north Atlantic.
The story of Titanic is more than just a modern Shakespearean tragedy.
Titanic is a memorial to the men and women who braved the boundaries of human achievement.
It is a humbling reminder that even the greatest of human achievements will be measured against, and sometimes tested by nature’s infinite superiority.
More than anything, it is a testament that when placed in the most tragic of circumstances, the temporal things that divide us dissolve away, and more often than not the noblest natures of the human soul are revealed; courage, sacrifice, and love.
— Dave Tinney
