Director’s Notes
“The separation between past, present, and future is only an illusion, although a convincing one.” -Albert Einstein
The Time Machine is a science fiction novella first published in 1895 by British author H.G. WELLS (1866-1946). This work is generally credited with popularizing the concept of time travel by using a vehicle or device to travel forward or backward through time. In his thinly disguised socio-political allegory, Wells’ fictional world centers around two future civilizations, the Morlocks and the Eloi, opposing versions of what he imagined mankind could become.
Since its publication nearly 130 years ago, countless versions of Wells’ novella have been reimagined into radio, television, and film versions of the story, most holding closely to Wells’ original plot line.
2024: MICHAEL D. FOX, a prolific new playwright has taken the premise of time travel from the original novella and woven a completely new adventure; partially historic, partially fiction and thoroughly original.
In Fox’s story, a mysterious old puzzle box is delivered to scientist Helene Briggs. When her 15-year-old granddaughter Skye opens the box, Helene is forced to confront her past. The two set off on an adventure that could either save the world or end all civilization forever.
To complement this story of a teen time traveler, Fox has partnered up with 15-year-old composer CAMERON DIETLEIN. Dietlein’s score is a mix of cinematic grandeur juxtaposed with elements of rock, jazz, and ethereal soundscapes. Dietlein’s youthful point of view gives the story an exciting, almost video game voice which perfectly complements the adventure of our young heroine Skye.
Unlike Wells’ original work, Fox’s play is not a political exploration, or a warning of what mankind might become in the future. Rather, it is a plea for our current generation to put away the distractions of the world and embrace the present.
We hope you enjoy this world premiere of The Time Machine.
