Director’s Notes
I love a good Western. The forsaken town in need of a hero. A tragic hero, with a lot of inner conflict. The shadowy figure. The oppressive tyrant. The longing for open skies and adventure.
I also love Newsies! I remember when the movie first came out, and I was one of the cult followers. I loved the music, the dancing, and the true underdog story. The power of the kids to make a difference. It inspired me.
Getting the chance to work on this show is a childhood dream, and I've loved bringing together elements from both the original movie and the history it narrates, as well as my love for the old-western genre.
In my studies of the news hawker strike of 1899, I found it compelling to see the walks of life these children and youth came from, all kinds of ages, backgrounds, and genders. Ultimately, it is a story of giving a voice to the voiceless, and what better way to do so than to give a voice to ALL of the people affected. You'll see on the stage young girls, people of different ethnicities, a wide array of humans that come from different walks of life, much like the melting pot that New York was at the turn of the century. These people came to live the American Dream...not just to have the freedom to make their own way, to find their own fortune and destiny, but to have their voice mean something, to have it matter. What a great message for our day. May it inspire us to speak up, but also, to listen...seek for understanding before seeking to be understood. Also...I hope you have a rollicking good time and enjoy the talent of this incredible cast!
— David Smith
