Director’s Notes
As you settle into your seat for tonight’s performance, let me be the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!
This is our 38th annual production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ and unbelievably, it is the 300th production in the history of Hale Centre Theatre! From our humble beginnings on Main Street in Salt Lake City to our rapid growth in West Valley City to the warm welcome we have received as we continue to grow in Sandy, we are truly blessed thanks to you, our audience!
Recently I went back and read my Director’s notes from 2004 where I stated at the first ever rehearsal I held for ‘A Christmas Carol’, I asked the cast to ‘give of themselves in the telling of this beautiful story’. That’s what we have been doing for 38 years now; giving a gift to more than 500,000 patrons who have walked thru our doors to partake of the Christmas Spirit. This show is a gift to the community and we are so grateful to be able to tell it.
I have many favorite lines from this story, but one that I believe is so important, especially during this holiday season is from Scrooge’s nephew, Fred. “I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time when it has come around, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time. The only time, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely and treat others, like fellow passengers to the grave”. I hope each and every one of us will put aside our differences and treat others with love and respect during this holiday season and beyond.
We believe that the journey that Ebenezer Scrooge takes in redeeming his life and connecting to those whom he has discarded in the past is a journey we all must consider at this time of year.
Thank you to the entire cast and crew of ‘A Christmas Carol’. I feel so fortunate to be a part of a wonderful team that cares so much about delivering the message of this show. A special thanks to Mark, Sally, Megan, Tyson, Kacey, David and Anne - I am so fortunate to work with each and every one of you and am so excited to open this show and celebrate Christmas once again!
Merry Christmas, Everyone!!
— John J. Sweeney
