Director’s Notes
Twelve Angry Men is generally acknowledged to be one of the greatest courtroom dramas of all time. As I have been researching and directing Rose’s masterpiece of a text, I have often cheekily referred to my experience as a woman directing this piece as Twelve Angry Men and Me. Despite my playful impertinence, this process has presented an opportunity to consider many valuable social and ethical questions. The events of this piece are remarkably applicable to the events in our world today. The script touches on aspects of mental fortitude, ethics and conceivable doubt. It also highlights themes of racial and social inequity. Throughout the play, there is an awareness of the true value of human life in a national system where it is stated that “all men are created equal.” Like all of us, the twelve jurors we see before us have a variety of personalities, backgrounds, prejudices. They have their own victories and defeats. They hold their own sorrows and joys. They come together in this one room to use their combined experience in judgement of another. They, in effect, have not only the power to save someone from the death penalty, but the power to change one another for the better. I have felt this as we have rehearsed. I have also personally wrestled with important questions: Where am I in this story? Am I being seen? Am I being heard? Where do I stand? Do I “see” those around me? What if it were me on trial? What difference can one person make in the world around me? What if that one person is me?
The process is not over. I am still asking questions. I am still looking for the answers. I invite you to join me in deliberation. For the next few moments, I invite you to listen, to see, to question, to empathize, and perhaps gain the courage to take a stand and make a change. What difference can one person make in the world around us? What difference can YOU make? I welcome you to this production, our production of Twelve Angry Men and YOU.
