Director’s Notes
Sister Act is a 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg as struggling Reno nightclub singer Deloris VanCartier. When Deloris witnesses her mobster boyfriend commit a murder, she is placed in police protection at a faltering convent in San Francisco. Disguised as Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris transforms a ragtag choir of nuns into a national sensation. The film was a huge hit and spawned a sequel and eventually this musical stage adaptation.
While most of the characters and plot made the transition from film to stage, writers of the musical adaptation Bill and Cheri Steinkellner chose to place the action in Philadelphia in 1978, one of the most turbulent years in the city’s history.
Philadelphia, also known as the “City of Brotherly Love”; (Philos, meaning beloved or loving, and adelphos meaning brother) was named by founder Willam Penn in 1682 to reflect the ideals of community and tolerance he envisioned.
However, by the 1970’s, Philadelphia was anything but communal, tolerant or brotherly. Crime, urban decay and deep social/cultural divisions were a proliferating plague. The ongoing conflict between the inner-city minorities and the Philadelphia police was a rapidly destabilizing powder keg. In 1978 the tensions finally erupted when a confrontation between the police and an activist group ended in a shootout that left many wounded and one officer dead. Sweeping arrests with quick and questionable trials resulted. Tragically, this was only the beginning of a years-long war between the police and inner-city populations.
Ironically, in the middle of this period of tensions, Pope John Paul II visited Philadelphia for a mass on Oct. 3, 1979, that was attended by an estimated 2 million people.
As the writers of Sister Act the Musical adapted the story, Philadelphia in 1978 emerged as a serendipitously poignant backdrop, immersing protagonist Deloris right into the deep end of history.
With the action taking place in 1978, composer Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame) was also able to give the show a very historic musical point of view, magnifying the period when Motown music and even disco were starting to decline, and groups like The Supremes were becoming obsolete. The musical evolution of the show magnifies Deloris’ desire to find stardom while racing toward a rapidly fading era, and to eventually embrace the harmonious blending of two opposing worlds.
Sister Act the Musical is an unusual love story between unlikely sisters. It reminds us that there is always something beyond first impressions, and that our differences are our strength. It reminds us that love is always stronger than hate, and that we are always stronger together than we are alone. It reminds us that voices shouted at one another in opposition will always be triumphed by voices raised together in harmony.
“Everyone, join your hands together. Everyone, find common ground. Everyone, sister and brother, love one another. Spread it around!” - Sister Act
This one is for Rene.
