Producer’s Notes
In the theater business, as in most businesses, it’s all about connections. We have been fortunate, especially in the last few years, to be able to acquire some theatrical gems just as they come off Broadway, the West End, or from other prominent theaters. This allows us to bring to you brand new works sprinkled in between more familiar plays and musicals. Such is the case with The Nutty Professor.
Just as with a thoroughbred racehorse, The Nutty Professor has come to us with a triple crown pedigree. We received permission to produce from the Jerry Lewis Family Foundation, from the delightful Terre Blair who was the wife of the irreplaceable composer, Marvin Hamlisch (remember the Academy Award-winning song, The Way We Were and the blockbuster musical, A Chorus Line? Yeah. That guy.) and celebrated Broadway script writer, Rupert Holmes. THE Triple Crown. This was Marvin Hamlisch’s last major work before he passed away in 2012. Jerry Lewis, himself, directed the first production.
We work hard to bring the very best to you.
It’s all about connections and about the theater industry honoring Hale Centre Theatre for years of production innovation and excellence. It’s about all of you fabulous patrons who continue to walk through the doors to enjoy the superbly uncommon creativity of the hundreds of local artists who work at HCT. We are honored to bring this joyful, new musical to you. We hope you have a marvelous time!

Director’s Notes
Jerry Lewis came to fame in 1946 as half of the comedy duo Martin and Lewis with singer Dean Martin. Martin served as the straight man to Lewis' boyish and unpredictable kinetic foolery, a unique dynamic that launched a meteoric rise. The duo would quickly conquer stage, film, and the new medium of television. After almost 15 years of a globally celebrated partnership, the two parted ways to pursue solo opportunities.
Shortly after a handful of solo films with Paramount Studios, Mr. Lewis solidified his status as a box office heavyweight. In 1959 Mr. Lewis negotiated a contract with Paramount for a then unheard-of sum of $10 million, plus 60% of the profits for 14 films over seven years. This made Lewis the highest-paid individual Hollywood talent to date. This deal was also unprecedented in that he retained unlimited creative control, including the final cut and the return of film rights after 30 years.
Over the next decade and a half, Mr. Lewis mined his incredibly diverse talents as a singer, dancer, actor, screenwriter, director, and producer to create some of the most beloved and enduring films of all time. Though many of his films featured variations of his popular comic persona, Mr. Lewis was always focused on breaking new ground, inventing new techniques for filmmaking, and challenging his audiences with brilliant satire.
In 1963, Mr. Lewis wrote, directed, and starred in The Nutty Professor, a modern spin on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The story follows bullied scientist Julius Kelp as he creates a serum that transforms him into his handsome and dangerous alter ego, Buddy Love.
Though the character of Kelp did echo his earlier comic personas, the film was a departure from Mr. Lewis’ typical fare. Diving head first into the Jekyll and Hyde story, Lewis explored themes of social archetypes, misogyny, and the duality of the human psyche. His daringly dark portrayal of Buddy Love was a potential risk for the actor whose career centered primarily around playing lovable misfits. This juxtaposition of gravitas and broad comedy proved to bring weight and credibility to the message of self-acceptance. The gamble would pay off, as The Nutty Professor is still considered to be one of his best and most enduring works.
In 2004, the U.S National Film Preservation Board included it among the 25 films inducted into the Library of Congress National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
In 2012, the premier of The Nutty Professor, A New Musical opened at the Nashville Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The plot of the musical closely follows the original film, with an updated book by Rupert Holmes and music by the Academy Award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch. The entire production was directed by the indefatigable 86-year-old Mr. Jerry Lewis himself.
We are excited to bring you the regional premiere of The Nutty Professor, A New Musical.
