Director's Notes

20 years ago, I found myself in the meditation gardens at Elvis’ Graceland. It was a very strange experience touring the house, the grounds, the barn, seeing the eternal flame, the gravestone. Elvis was, for me, a discussion of history, an icon, but of what specifically, I didn’t have a full appreciation.

I have spent the last 20 years teaching music to so many different artists. They are as unique as they are varied. Each of them has a story: a history that influences their melodic choices, their trills, their vibrato, their very ‘voice’. But along the way that story can get lost to the pages of history. We forget that when the behemoth RCA Records took Elvis away from Sun Records, Elvis lost one of the most devoted cheerleaders of his career. Few can doubt the effect it had on his life, but to what extent will never be fully clear. That is how it is with each of us: we sometimes forget the minute details that have lasting effects on who we become as people and artists.

Million Dollar Quartet is a reminder of those moments. For Sam Perkins, there are numerous moments that may have influenced his career in various ways. For these four seemingly unrelated musicians, there is at least one particular evening when they were in the same room at the same time influencing each other toward history. They had a jam session. The details of how they got in that room may not be known, but we know they were all there, doing what artists do best: sharing. Each of these four artists had a lasting effect on songwriting, the music industry, and the greater society as a whole. Their music has lasted generations. Million Dollar Quartet is about the legacy of the music and the moments that created that legacy.
