Director’s Notes
Although I grew up with only brothers, I found myself drawn to the story of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
I moved around a lot as a kid, and in doing so, found myself clinging to my family for support in my time of loneliness and fear. My family meant everything to me. And yes, we would fight. We had our differences, even our own individual interests, but in the end I knew who had my back when the going got rough.
I also understood and related to Jo. Like Jo I enjoyed putting on shows in my living room for my family. I was often found studying Michael Jackson music videos, attempting to learn every move to perform. My parents, just like Marmee, saw my love for writing and storytelling. They got me an old computer program called Storybook Weaver that allowed me to write my own stories...so, so, so many stories.
As I grew up, I realized I was a hopeless romantic, like Laurie, and realized that I wanted to marry a March girl, someone demure and family-loving, like Meg. Someone thoughtful, caring, and loving, like Beth. Someone adventurous, lovely, and spunky, like Amy, and someone who loved stories as much as I do, a ringleader, and a loyal friend, like Jo. I was lucky enough to find my March girl, all of those things wrapped up into one.
When I think back on those wonderful times together with family, of course the people are the most important part of that memory, but right alongside them, are the places and spaces where those memories reside...the upstairs TV room, where I danced to Smooth Criminal. The downstairs basement, where the entire floor was a canvas for creativity. The living room fireplace, where the stage was set to put on the play. Those spaces are sacred to me, just like the attic was a sacred space for the March sisters.
We wanted to explore this idea of "sacred spaces" in this production, paying homage to the places where this family was inseparable, where those defining moments in their young lives took place. Where they find who they are, what they believe in, and what matters most. I hope that this production allows you as the viewer to think back to those "sacred spaces" in your life and to the people who reside there.
I am grateful for the strength and courage of Louisa May Alcott to write something so honest and real, so relatable and timeless, to help inspire me as a father now, to instill in my own daughters, my own little women, to reach for the stars, feed the fire within, and become Astonishing.
This is for you.
