Director’s Notes
“All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.”
- J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan and Wendy
Like many classic fairytales, the story of Peter Pan is so intricately woven into the collective consciousness of our childhood, it feels as if it has always existed. Hard to believe the ‘boy who wouldn’t grow up’ is only a youthful 123 years old.
Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie first introduced the character of Peter Pan in his 1902 book The Little White Bird. Sometime later, Barrie met and befriended young widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her five sons. As the ever-youthful Barrie made up stories and played fantasy games with the children, the Peter Pan as we know him emerged; the free-spirited and mischievous boy who could fly.
In 1904, Barrie’s play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, opened on the West End in London. Though producers and public alike were initially skeptical, the play soon became a mega hit, opening a year later in New York (and playing somewhere in the world ever since for the next 100 years)
Barrie would revise and refine his play over the next several years, and in 1911, his novelized version of the story was published as Peter Pan and Wendy. Since then, the character of Peter Pan has been featured in a countless variety of media and merchandise, both adapting and expanding on Barrie's works.
In 1998, author Allen Knee published his play The Man Who Was Peter Pan, a semi-biographical re-telling of how the Llewellyn Davies family inspired J. M. Barrie’s most famous alter ego. Knee’s play explored the idea that Barrie created the world of Peter Pan as a means to help the young boys cope with their mother’s terminal illness and inevitable passing. Barrie placed his title character in the twilight of youth, which precipitates the gap between the carefree naivety of childhood and the inescapable consequences of adulthood. He filled his world with shadows, lost boys, crocodiles with ticking clocks, a villainous ship captain with a hook for a hand, and fairy dust that can make you fly if you just have faith. It gave the Llewelyn Davies boys hope that somewhere, ‘Second star to the right and straight on till morning’, there was a magical land where there is no time, and no one grows older; a place called Neverland.
In 2004, Knee’s play was adapted into the motion picture Finding Neverland starring Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp.
Finding Neverland, the musical, opened on Broadway in 2015 and starred Matthew Morrison as J.M. Barrie, Laura Michelle Kelly as Sylvia, and Kelsey Grammer as Charles Frohman/Captain Hook.
Much like the character Peter Pan, who is destined to return time and time again, still young and free and full of adventure, J. M. Barrie’s work will return time and time again and live forever as a reminder that someday we will all fly away to Neverland.
-Dave T.
