Director’s Notes
In the 1930s, ’40s, and into the 1950s there was a cultural fervor over murder mysteries. Radio, magazine, and film audiences couldn’t get enough, and no one could satisfy the public’s appetite for murder with a twist like English writer Agatha Christie. Her stories such as Death on the Nile, Ten Little Indians, Murder on the Orient Express, and The Mousetrap made her the undisputed master of the murder mystery.
A premise popularized by writers like Christie is the idea of a seemingly unconnected group of characters coming together and somehow being trapped in a location or situation where a murder occurs. As the plot develops, the characters are all revealed to have motives and become suspects. That basic premise has been repeated countless times in books, plays, television shows, and movies. It has even been parodied in films such as Neil Simon’s Murder By Death”.
Capitalizing on the popularity of the Agatha Christie-style murder mystery, CLUE the board game was released by the English company Waddingtons in 1949. In the game, players assume the personae of one of six suspects: Mr. Green, Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, and Mrs. White. Players move from room to room through a two- dimensional mansion, collecting clues from the murder of imaginary victim Mr. Boddy. They then deduce which suspect is the murderer, with which weapon, and in what room the crime was committed.
Since its release, the board game has become a classic and has been relaunched and updated several times. It has even been re-imagined with limited editions of the game featuring new suspects from worlds such as The Simpsons, The Office, Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, and even Star Wars.
In 1985, the characters from the board game finally made it to the silver screen. CLUE, the Movie is a black comedy farce based on the board game, written in the style of those classic Christie murder mysteries. Since its release, it too has become a cult classic.
CLUE on Stage is a play, based on the film, based on the board game, based on the old murder mysteries. So, I guess you could say this is art imitating art imitating art imitating art imitating life imitating…well…death.
We’re excited to have you with us on our search for tonight’s murderer. Enjoy the show.
And…if you find a clue…I suggest you keep it to yourself! You just might make it out alive.
Mwahahahahaha! (Thunder! Lightning!)
— Dave Tinney
